of our office very well! 

Volunteerism is one of the ways my office and I strive to serve our neighbors and community.  You will often see donation bins at our office. We do two large food drives per year for local food banks and other drives for toiletries, backpacks full of school supplies (we filled 78 in 2021), Holiday Gift drive (festively wrapped of course!) for Nursing Home residents or families through Urban Ministries, and even a shoe drive. We do several other community service projects per year which have included Habitat houses, Red Cross blood drives, making toiletries kits for people in need, serving meals at Urban Ministries of Durham, Market fundraisers for Durham Central Park.

In 2003 we began creating the beautiful BHHS garden at Durham Central Park on the hill behind/above the farmers market and have provided the joyful labor creating and maintaining the extensive plantings throughout the years.  Through fundraisers we have added wonderful improvements including sculpture, benches, trellis, rock walls and irrigation. The “Family Sculpture”, a well-known sentinel overlooking Durham Central Park was commissioned work by Vega Metals as was our distinctive bronze Butterfly Bench. It is an honor to have been part of Durham Central Park from the beginning, and a thrill to be part of what it has become.

I am honored to have been a 2019 Durham recipient of the
Governors Award for Excellence in Volunteerism for my work with Threshold Clubhouse, an amazing program for adults in Durham with severe and persistent mental illness.
