“We Make Great Neighbors”
This BHHS motto represents the culture of our office very well. Volunteerism is one of the ways my office and I strive to serve our neighbors and community.
You will often see donation bins at our office. We do two large food drives per year for local non-profits, and other drives for toiletries and school supplies and even a shoe drive. We do several other community service projects per year which have included Habitat houses, Red Cross blood drives, Keep Durham Beautiful roadside cleanups, making toiletries kits for people in need, serving meals monthly at Urban Ministries of Durham, Durham Central Park Meals at the Market fundraisers, Un Mundo fundraisers.
In 2003 we began creating the beautiful BHHS garden at Durham Central Park (on the hill behind/above the farmer market) and have provided the joyful labor creating and maintaining the extensive plantings. Through fundraisers we have added wonderful improvements including sculpture, benches, trellis, rock walls and irrigation. The “Family Sculpture”, a well-known sentinel overlooking the garden and DCP was commissioned work by Vega Metals as was the distinctive bronze Butterfly Bench.
In addition to the above I personally volunteer and/or financially support the following:
Threshold Clubhouse (Community Day Program for adults with severe mental illness),
Urban Ministries of Durham
Un Mundo (nonprofit facilitating access to health care, education, clean water in Central American areas of extreme poverty)
WUNC Sustainer ~ Public Radio, Durham Rescue Mission
SPLC, MLK Day of Service
The Nature Conservancy
ASPCA (Animal protection)
